Quick answer
Choose Udawalawe if you want to see wild elephants up close: herds are seen on almost every drive and the park is open all year. Udawalawe: the elephant park
Udawalawe is open grassland and scrub around a large reservoir, so animals are easy to spot. It is famous for its wild elephant herds, often whole families with babies at the water's edge. If seeing elephants is your number one wish, this is the safer bet.
You'll also see water buffalo, crocodiles, jackals and lots of birds: eagles, kingfishers and peacocks. Because it's open all year and less crowded, it works well for families and first-time safari goers.
Combine it
Udawalawe sits on the way from the south coast to Ella, so it's easy to do a morning safari and continue into the hills. See Galle to Ella by car.
Yala: wild jungle, lagoons and hot springs
Yala is Sri Lanka's most famous national park: thick jungle, rocky outcrops, lagoons and even beaches inside the park. Elephants, crocodiles, water buffalo, spotted deer and more than 200 bird species live here.
Yala is also home to leopards and sloth bears, but they are shy and not seen on every drive, so treat them as a lucky bonus rather than the reason to go. Yala gets busy in peak season, and the main block usually closes for a few weeks around September–October.
Our Yala safari also includes a stop at natural hot springs, which makes the long drive part of the fun.
Morning or afternoon?
Both parks have two main sessions. We start at 6:00 AM or 1:30 PM at the park.
- Morning: cooler, animals are active, but it means a very early pickup from the coast.
- Afternoon: no 3 am alarm, golden light for photos, animals come out again as it cools down.
What a safari really costs
Doing it yourself means paying for park tickets at the gate, hiring a jeep and tracker, finding transport from the coast and choosing somewhere to eat. Prices for foreigners are high and jeep rates are often negotiated on the spot.
With Zipp, it's $99 per person, all inclusive: hotel pickup and drop-off in the Galle–Matara area, park tickets, the jeep, a tracker who explains the animals, a meal and water. Starting from somewhere else? Rates differ slightly, just message us.
