Three ways to drive it
1. Direct (fastest)
East along the coast and the Southern Expressway, then up into the hills. Leave after breakfast and you're in Ella for a late lunch.
2. Via Udawalawe (best for elephants)
Leave early, do a 3-hour jeep safari in Udawalawe National Park — one of the most reliable places in Sri Lanka to see wild elephants — and continue to Ella in the afternoon. We can arrange the Udawalawe safari for you, all inclusive.
3. Via Yala (for jungle and lagoons)
Stay a night near Tissamaharama, do a sunrise safari in Yala, then drive up to Ella via Wellawaya and past Ravana Falls. This turns it into a relaxed 2-day trip — see our Wild Safari Adventure.
Local tip
Safari jeeps and park tickets are paid separately at the park. Your driver can help arrange a jeep and waits while you're on safari.
Can you take the train or bus?
Train: there's no direct train. The famous hill-country line runs from Colombo and Kandy to Ella, so from Galle you'd first go up the coast to Colombo — a full day of travel. Many travellers drive to Ella and take the scenic train later, from Ella towards Kandy.
Bus: possible, usually with at least one change, and slow with luggage.
