Quick answer
Sri Lanka has two monsoons, so there's always a sunny side. December to April is best for the south and west coasts (Galle, Mirissa) and the hill country. May to September is best for the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay), while the south gets more rain. The Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya) is good most of the year. October–November brings showers island-wide but fewer crowds.
Two monsoons, explained simply
- Southwest monsoon (about May–September): rain on the west and south coasts and the western hill country. The east coast is dry and sunny.
- Northeast monsoon (about November/December–February): rain in the north and east. The south and west coasts are at their best.
- Inter-monsoon (about October–November, and a short spell in April): afternoon thunderstorms can happen anywhere on the island.
Exact months shift a little each year, and "rainy season" in Sri Lanka usually means heavy showers for an hour or two, not all-day rain (source, source). For live forecasts, see the Department of Meteorology.

South coast (Galle, Mirissa, Unawatuna)
Best: December to April. Calm seas, sunny days and the main whale-watching season off Mirissa. This is peak season, so book hotels early for Christmas and January.
May to September: the sea gets rough and red flags go up on many beaches, but it's greener, quieter and cheaper. Galle Fort and inland day trips still work well.
Local tip
Visiting the south in summer? Spend the beach days on the east coast instead and keep Galle Fort for a day of sightseeing — our drivers do this route often.
East coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay)
Best: May to September. Flat turquoise water around Trincomalee and Pigeon Island, and surf season in Arugam Bay. From November to January the northeast monsoon brings heavy rain and many places close.

Hill country & Cultural Triangle
Hill country (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella): clearest from January to April. It can rain any month and nights are cool — bring a jumper. The Ella train and tea estates are beautiful year-round.
Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa): dry for most of the year and the easiest region to visit in almost any month. Climb rocks early — it's hot by 10 am.
So when should you go?
- First visit, want everything: January to March.
- Summer holidays (June–August): Cultural Triangle + hill country + east coast beaches.
- Lower prices, fewer crowds: April, September or October — expect some showers.
- Not sure about transport? See what a private car with driver costs.

Ask on WhatsAppFrequently asked questions
What is the best month to visit Sri Lanka?
February and March are the safest bets for good weather across the south, west, hill country and Cultural Triangle. For the east coast, June to August is best.
Is it worth visiting Sri Lanka during monsoon?
Yes. Rain usually comes in short, heavy bursts, and because the monsoons hit different coasts, one side of the island is always drier. You also get lower prices and fewer crowds.
When is whale watching in Mirissa?
Roughly November/December to April, when the sea on the south coast is calm. Boats rarely run in the southwest monsoon months.
