When is whale-watching season in Mirissa?
The season follows the south coast's calm months: roughly November to April. December to March usually has the smoothest seas and the most reliable trips. From May to October the southwest monsoon makes the sea rough and boats rarely go out.

Which whales can you see?
- Blue whales: the largest animal ever, and the reason Mirissa is famous.
- Sperm whales: seen regularly, sometimes in groups.
- Bryde's whales and other species now and then.
- Spinner dolphins: big pods leaping next to the boat.
- Flying fish and the occasional sea turtle.
They're wild animals, so nothing is guaranteed, but in season the chance of seeing whales is high.
What the boat trip is like
- Early pickup from your hotel.
- 6:00 AM: the boat leaves Mirissa harbour as the sun comes up.
- Morning: the crew searches for whales and dolphins, often 1–2 hours offshore.
- Late morning: back at the harbour and drop-off at your hotel.
Our partner boat has two decks with shaded seating, so you can sit out of the sun and still get a clear view.
Tips for a good day
- Seasickness: take a tablet before you board if you're unsure. Sit on the lower deck near the middle of the boat and look at the horizon.
- Bring: sunscreen, a hat, a light jacket for the early breeze, water and a camera.
- Eat light: a small breakfast is better than a big one.
- Choose a responsible boat: good crews keep their distance and don't chase the whales.
