Quick answer

In 2026 a private car with an English-speaking driver in Sri Lanka typically costs about US$40–100 per day, depending on the vehicle and trip length. With Zipp, a car costs $40/day on trips of 6+ days, a sedan $60/day, a mini van $60/day and a 9-seat HiAce $85/day — fuel, tolls, parking and the driver's food and room are included. Short trips and one-way transfers are priced per km — expect local market rates of roughly LKR 100–120 per km for a car, plus expressway tolls (e.g. Colombo airport to Galle starts at about LKR 15,000).

Why most visitors hire a driver

Sri Lanka is small on the map but slow on the road. Mountain bends, busy town centres and tuk-tuks mean 200 km can take five hours. Self-driving is possible, but you need a local driving permit and nerves of steel. Trains are beautiful but often full, and buses are cheap but hard work with luggage.

A private car with driver solves all of that: you're picked up at your hotel, stop wherever you like, and your driver knows which roads are fast, where the clean toilets are and which rice & curry place is worth it. For two or more people it is often not much more expensive than stitching together trains, taxis and tuk-tuks.

Our 2026 prices (per vehicle, not per person)

Prices are for the whole vehicle, so the cost per person drops as your group grows. Day rates include fuel, expressway tolls, parking and the driver's meals and accommodation. Short trips and transfers are priced per km at local market rates, with expressway tolls added on top.

For comparison, published rates from other Sri Lankan operators in 2025–2026 mostly range from about $60–100 per day for a car, rising to $160 for large vans, and around $0.35–0.85 per km (source, source). Always check what's included — a cheap day rate that excludes fuel or the driver's room is not cheap.

About the driver's room

Many Sri Lankan hotels have separate driver quarters, and some charge for them. With us you never pay for the driver's room or food — it's already in the price.

Should you tip your driver?

Tipping is common but never required. Published guidance varies a lot: Intrepid suggests around US$4–6 per day for drivers on its group tours (source), while Experience Travel Group suggests LKR 3,500–4,500 per day for a private chauffeur-guide (source). Most travellers tip once at the end of the trip, in rupees, based on how much the driver added to their holiday. More detail in our tipping guide.

How to choose a driver or company

  • Ask for an all-inclusive price in writing — fuel, tolls, parking and the driver's stay.
  • Check recent reviews on Google or TripAdvisor, not only the company's own site.
  • Match the vehicle to your luggage, not just your group size. Four people with big suitcases need a van.
  • Confirm the language — make sure the driver speaks English (or your language) well enough to chat on long drives.
  • Agree on daily driving hours and whether extra stops cost more.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a driver per day in Sri Lanka?

Typically US$40–100 per day for a car with driver, depending on the vehicle, trip length and what is included. Our mini car is $40/day on trips of 6+ days and $50/day on 3–5 day trips, all-inclusive.

Is it cheaper per km or per day?

For short trips and transfers, drivers charge per km — roughly LKR 100–120 per km for a car plus expressway tolls. For tours of 3 days or more, a fixed daily rate is cheaper and simpler.

Do I need to pay for my driver's hotel and food?

With Zipp, no — the driver's meals and accommodation are included. With other companies, always ask, as some charge it separately.

Can we change the route during the trip?

Yes. It's a private vehicle, so you can add stops or change plans. If the change adds a lot of distance on a per-km trip, the driver will tell you the difference before you go.
