Quick answer
Sigiriya is about 275 km from Galle — 5 hours or more each way by car — so a day trip means a 16–17 hour day starting around 4–5 am. It's doable, but we usually recommend a 2-day trip: with per-km pricing the vehicle costs about the same, the driver's stay is included, and you can climb the rock early before the heat and crowds.
How far is Sigiriya from Galle?
| From | Distance (approx.) | Drive time one way |
|---|---|---|
| Galle | ≈ 275 km | 5 – 5.5 hours |
| Habaraduwa / Unawatuna | ≈ 290 km | 5.5 hours |
| Mirissa / Weligama | ≈ 300 km | 5.5 – 6 hours |
Via the Southern Expressway and the Kandy–Dambulla road. Times are without long stops and vary with traffic around Colombo and Kurunegala.
The expressway makes the first part fast, but the last 100+ km to Dambulla and Sigiriya are on ordinary roads through towns. Online route planners quote anything from about 4 to 5.5 hours (source); in our experience 5 hours is realistic with a short breakfast stop.
What a day trip really looks like
- 4:00–4:30 am — pick-up at your hotel on the south coast (packed breakfast).
- 9:30 am — arrive at Sigiriya. Climb the rock (allow 2–3 hours including the museum).
- 12:30 pm — lunch nearby, then the Dambulla Cave Temple (about 20 minutes away).
- 3:00 pm — start the drive back.
- 8:30–9:00 pm — back at your hotel.
That's around 16–17 hours with 10+ hours in the car. Tours sold online from the south coast follow the same pattern, often starting before 5 am (example). It works if you're short on time and don't mind a long day — kids and anyone prone to car sickness usually don't enjoy it.
Heat warning
Arriving at 9:30 am means climbing in the hottest part of the day. The rock opens around 5–5:30 am, and the first two hours are cooler and much quieter.
The better plan: Sigiriya in 2 days
Because trips under 3 days are priced per km, staying one night in Sigiriya adds very little to the vehicle cost — the distance is almost the same, and the driver's room and food are already included.
- Day 1: leave Galle after breakfast, stop at the Dambulla Cave Temple, sunset hike up Pidurangala rock (with a view of Sigiriya).
- Day 2: climb Sigiriya at opening time, optional village tour or Minneriya elephant safari, then drive back to the coast.

- Bring water, a hat and shoes with grip — there are about 1,200 steps.
- Shoulders and knees covered is respectful at Dambulla (it's an active temple).
- Hornets occasionally close the upper section; your driver will hear about it from local guides.
- Short on fitness? The neighbouring Pidurangala rock is cheaper and gives the classic view of Sigiriya.
Frequently asked questions
Can you do Sigiriya as a day trip from Galle?
Yes, but it's a 16–17 hour day with about 10 hours of driving. It works if you only have one free day; otherwise a 2-day trip is far more relaxed and costs nearly the same in vehicle price.
What time should I leave Galle for Sigiriya?
Around 4:00–4:30 am to arrive by about 9:30 am. If you stay overnight instead, leave after breakfast and climb at opening time the next morning.
How much is the Sigiriya ticket in 2026?
About US$35 for foreign adults and US$20 for SAARC nationals; children 6–12 pay about half and under-6s are free. Check the official Central Cultural Fund site before your visit, as prices change.
Is the train or bus an option?
There's no direct train to Sigiriya. By public transport from Galle you'd need several buses and most of a day each way, so a private driver is the practical choice for a short visit.
