Quick answer

Ten days is enough for Sri Lanka's highlights by private car: south coast beaches and Galle Fort, a safari, Ella and the hill-country train, Kandy and Sigiriya. Keep drives under about 4 hours a day. With Zipp the car and driver for 10 days costs $400 in a mini car (up to 3 people), $600 in a sedan (up to 3), $600 in a mini van (up to 5) or $850 in a HiAce (up to 9), including fuel, tolls and the driver's stay.

Times are approximate and without long stops. Your driver adjusts the plan to weather, opening times and how you feel.

Days 1–3: South coast

Start slowly after the flight. The airport to Galle drive takes about 2–2.5 hours on the expressways. Spend a day in Galle Fort — ramparts, lighthouse, cafés — and a beach day in Unawatuna or Jungle Beach.

In Mirissa, take a whale-watching boat in season (roughly December to April) or a surf lesson in Weligama, and watch sunset from Coconut Tree Hill.

Days 4–7: Safari and the hills

Head inland to Udawalawe for an afternoon jeep safari — one of the best places in Sri Lanka for wild elephants. Next day, climb into the hills to Ella (more on that drive): hike Little Adam's Peak at sunrise, see the Nine Arch Bridge and Ravana Falls.

On day 7 ride the famous hill-country train through the tea estates. Your driver takes the luggage by road and meets you at the station — the best of both worlds.

Train tickets

Reserved seats on the Ella line sell out well ahead in high season, so book as early as you can. Unreserved tickets bought on the day are an option if you don't mind standing for part of the ride.

Days 8–10: Kandy and Sigiriya

Drive down through tea country (stop at a tea factory) to Kandy for the Temple of the Tooth and its evening ceremony. On day 9 continue to the Dambulla Cave Temple and Sigiriya.

Climb Sigiriya at opening time on day 10 — cool and quiet — then it's about 4 hours to the airport. This suits evening flights; for a morning flight, spend the last night near the airport in Negombo.

Frequently asked questions

Is 10 days enough for Sri Lanka?

Yes — 10 days covers the main highlights (beaches, a safari, the hill country, Kandy and Sigiriya) without rushing, if you keep drives to about 2–4 hours a day.

How much does a 10-day Sri Lanka trip with a driver cost?

The car and driver cost $400–850 for 10 days with Zipp depending on the vehicle, all-inclusive. Add hotels, tickets and meals for the full trip budget.

Can we do the route in reverse?

Yes. Starting with Sigiriya and ending on the beach works just as well — and it's nice to finish the holiday relaxing.
