Quick answer

Tipping in Sri Lanka is appreciated but never compulsory. For a private driver, published guidance ranges from about US$4–6 per day up to LKR 3,500–4,500 per day for a chauffeur-guide, usually given once at the end of the trip in rupees. With Zipp, the driver's food and room are already paid — any tip is simply a thank-you.

How much to tip your driver

There's no fixed rule, and published amounts vary:

  • Intrepid suggests around US$4–6 per day for drivers on its group tours (source).
  • Experience Travel Group suggests LKR 3,500–4,500 per day for a private chauffeur-guide (source).

A private driver who also acts as your guide — planning stops, translating, finding good food — is usually tipped at the higher end. Tip what you feel the service was worth; a simple airport transfer doesn't need the same as a two-week tour.

When and how to tip

  • At the end of the trip is most common — one envelope, given personally.
  • In Sri Lankan rupees is easiest for the driver; US dollars or euros are fine too but need changing.
  • A good Google or TripAdvisor review mentioning the driver by name means a lot too — it directly helps their work.
