Quick answer

Galle to Kandy is roughly 230 km — about 4.5 to 5 hours by private car, using the expressways around Colombo. The train is possible but needs a change in Colombo and takes longer. A one-way trip by private car costs roughly LKR 23,000–28,000 (≈ US$75–95) plus expressway tolls, or LKR 33,000–40,000 in a mini van. A Kandy day trip from Galle is possible but very long — we recommend staying a night.

Route planners quote 221–242 km and about 4.5–5 hours from Galle (source, source). The expressways make the first half quick; the last stretch into Kandy is slower, especially in the afternoon.

Car, train or bus?

The coastal train to Colombo is lovely, but connecting to a Kandy train with bags and fixed timetables makes it a long day. By car you leave when you want and stop when you like.

Stops worth making on the way

  • Kegalle / Pinnawala area — elephant experiences on the Colombo–Kandy road (choose places that don't offer rides).
  • Spice gardens around Kandy and Matale — short guided tours of cinnamon, pepper and cardamom.
  • Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens — just before Kandy, great for a late-afternoon walk.

Local tip

Aim to reach Kandy by late afternoon: the evening offering ceremony at the Temple of the Tooth and the Kandyan dance shows are both in the early evening.

Can you do Kandy as a day trip from Galle?

It's possible but means 9–10 hours in the car for a few hours in Kandy. A better plan is one night in Kandy, then continue to the tea country, Ella or Sigiriya instead of driving back — see our Hill Country & Tea Trails and Cultural Triangle tours, or the 10-day itinerary.
